What readers are saying about Married to Millie: The Humble Life of Herb Monroe
I am a reader. I have always had a book in my hand. From the very first page of Married to Millie, I was engrossed in Herb’s life story. I could have sat down and read the whole book in one sitting. However, this book is the rare find that makes me read very slowly because I never want it to end. Jane certainly has a unique story-telling gift, and Herb was a very special subject.

What a beautiful tribute to an incredible man! Jane made me feel like I actually knew Herb, and if he were still alive I would probably come to Paulding and make her introduce me to him. She must have had some really good sources, because it seemed like she knew him even during his childhood. In reading the book, it is almost like the reader takes the entire journey with him. It was so touching that I cried through about the last 20 pages of the book. I’m sure Herb is looking down on us with compassion and love, and of course, humility. He’s probably blushing. Loved it!

Those of you who know me know that I LOVE to read, read a lot, and may I say that this is one of the best books I have read in a long, long time. If you like history on how our country progressed into the age where we totally rely on electricity, if you like the history of Paulding County, if you knew and loved Herb and Millie and their sons, you won’t want to miss it. What a great read!

This book is an historical and inspirational account of the life of a man we can all know and love. It is beautifully written in a language we can all easily read and become involved in day-to-day as Herb’s story unfolds. It is so real. I couldn’t put it down. I especially enjoyed the history of Paulding County as it related to Herb, his work, and his family. It made me want to drive to each location where the story took place and envision what it must have been like then.

I received your book last night and couldn’t put it down. I love your writing style, I love your creative titles, I love how the chapters are anecdotal, I love all the detail, I love the photos... I can see how it took 10 years to research and write. I can’t wait to get back to it! Wow, what an accomplishment!

I’ve been showing off this book to family and friends, and the question I always get asked is, “Well, what did he do?” This seems like a simple question but it’s tough to answer because the answer is, “nothing, really.” He wasn’t a war hero or a brain surgeon or a diplomat. He was just a wonderful person who lived a fairly ordinary life, but he had an extraordinary impact on those around him. This book is about someone who did many small things. Granddad achieved greatness with a kind word, a well-timed joke or a helping hand. Don’t think you can’t make a difference because you’re not important. True greatness lies in the ways we brighten the world for those who travel life’s road alongside us.
